These terms keep Morally Open simple and safe for everyone. By filling out the survey or using this site, you agree to them.

What Morally Open is

Morally Open is a free, student-run initiative that pairs University of Michigan students for one-on-one conversations with someone whose morals are the same, similar, or different from their own. It is an independent student project — not a service operated by the University of Michigan.

Who can participate

Morally Open is for University of Michigan students — anyone with an active uniqname. One survey per person. Answer honestly — pairings are only as good as the answers behind them.

The pledge

Everyone who signs up makes the same pledge: show up curious and respectful. Harassment, hate, threats, or targeting anyone for what they believe — none of it has a place here. Break the pledge and we may decline to pair you, or stop pairing you, and we won't always be able to warn you first.

Matching

We create pairings from survey answers and your stated preference (same, similar, different, or surprise me), and email them to uniqname@umich.edu. We do our best, but we cannot guarantee a match in any given round, a particular kind of match, or that your match will follow through. If we can't pair you in a round, we will email you to say so.

Your conversations are yours

We make the introduction; everything after it is between you and your match. Use good judgment as you would with anyone new — a public spot on campus is a great place for a first conversation. Morally Open is a space for dialogue, not counseling or professional advice. If anything about an interaction concerns you, tell us through the contact form.

Run by volunteers

Morally Open is run by volunteers and provided as is, without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for interruptions to the service, for a missed or imperfect pairing, or for what is said or done in conversations between participants.

Privacy

How we handle your answers is covered by our privacy policy, which is part of these terms. The short version: your answers are used only to pair you and email you — never shown to your match, never made public.

Changes

If these terms change, we will update this page and the date at the top. Using the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
